SOUND-ABSORBING COMMUNITY-WOVEN RAINBOW TAPESTRY
Pioneer Ocean View United Church of Christ approached me about improving the acoustics in their sanctuary by creating some sort of sound-absorbing fabric wall covering. I spent a lot of time thinking about how this fabric could not only be functional but also beautiful, community-building, upcycling, and symbolic.
What came out of that is a 28' long, 3' wide rainbow tapestry woven by all ages! The rainbow symbolizes our support of the LGBTQIA2S+ community, and all of the fabric scraps were donated by the community. All of the sewers brought their scissors and cut and sewed 200+ strips each 3/4" wide. Then everyone got to work weaving and passing the strips to one another since the weaving was so big that we couldn't reach the other side alone. It was a true community effort!
